Daycrawling

No nightcrawling in New Zealand, it seems.

I loved Nightcrawler - a tale of a young driven entrepreneur's entry into the business of being first on the scene to shoot graphic footage for the local cable news. America's competitive local news market combined with high consumer demand for bloody images created the industry.

Here in New Zealand, well:

Great conclusion to the story.

But more broadly, some hypotheses about why there mightn't be payment for nightcrawling:
  • The photo wasn't bloody enough to draw payment;
  • NZ's media market isn't as competitive as that in L.A.;
  • Photos are less likely to draw payment than videos;
  • There's less consumer demand in NZ for crash videos and pictures
I lean to a combination of 2 and 4.

The Dom's story is here.

  1. Geoff Mackley probably counts, he was doing freelance stuff (and getting paid for it) back in the 80s/90s.

    Scroll to "Background". http://www.rambocam.com/about.html

    You can also find a lot of his footage on youtube, some of his newer volcano stuff is amazing.
